Pirarucu: A Luxurious and Ecological Material

The pirarucu (Arapaima gigas), the world's largest scaled freshwater fish, can grow over 10 feet in length and weigh nearly 500 lbs. Native to the Amazon Basin, it plays an essential role in the ecosystem while also supporting the livelihoods of local communities.

For over 20 years, Brazil has championed a pioneering approach to pirarucu management, empowering local communities to establish sustainable harvesting practices. Since the initiative began in 1999, 33 areas have been authorized for sustainable pirarucu harvesting, ensuring the recovery of fish stocks while providing food security and income for residents. This model has become a global conservation success story, with pirarucu populations thriving in managed areas.

The use of pirarucu leather blends sustainability with luxury, representing ecological consciousness and a commitment to preserving the Amazon. Our suppliers’ tanning process marries advanced technology with ancestral Amazonian traditions, respecting nature while creating a positive impact on Indigenous and riverside communities. This production cycle helps preserve species, supports local livelihoods, and fosters a more sustainable future, proving that true luxury can coexist with responsibility.
